Northern Wisconsin Musky Opener Report with Steve Heiting
Weather was sunny and windy on Saturday, then rainy and windy on Sunday, but it was still great northwoods musky opener.
Two friends and I caught five muskies up to 40 inches long between Saturday and Sunday, and lost several nippers. Most of the fish we contacted were males (as expected), but we did have action with fish up to 42-43 inches.
We fished two small, stained water musky lakes. Water temps had fallen from the mid 60s to 59-60 over the weekend.
Muskies were mostly in scattered weeds. On Saturday we found them in 4-6 FOW and experienced a very short window when we caught two and lost one in 25 minutes. On Sunday, we found several fish in deep wood in the first two hours, caught one and lost two more. After a two-hour lull, the muskies became active again, but in scattered weeds in 6-8 FOW.
Twitchbaits provided most of the action but we also moved fish on small gliders and Mepps spinners. The only common denominator was the lure had to be orange.
