Guidelines with Keith Cortopassi: Indiana

The last week has been high skies with temperatures reaching the low 80s midday and dropping as low as the 50s at night. Fish have been moving and slowly making their usual transitions from late summer to early fall mode. One of the greatest things about Indiana musky fishing at this time of year, is that you can usually catch fish using a wide variety of tactics. Everything from topwater lures to vertical jigging presentations can pay off. Don’t overlook the trolling bite either.
Dive and rise baits such as Brotherhood Baits ‘wake up call’ and Chaos Tackles ‘navin’ have been getting attention the last few days, as well as Musky Mayhem ‘showgirls.’  Traditionally, glide baits such as hellhounds, ashcrafts, and musky combat sidewinders, paired with large rubber lures will take over my bait selection for the remainder of the year.
As we blast into the beginning of October, air and water temperatures will drop quickly and with that, live bait will become an integral part of my program.  Keep in mind there will be a bite window once or twice daily, even on the toughest days.
It is  imperative to pay attention to the moonrise/set on slow days. This is an exceptional time to be on Indiana musky waters, with both numbers and size being very impressive by any standard.
