We have hit the midway mark of October and Canadians are just coming off our Thanksgiving weekend. Unseasonably warm temps have continued right up to this past weekend, keeping most lakes in the low 60’s for water temps. Lake levels remained low all summer and fall, and we don’t expect a big change before the lakes freeze over this year.

The past couple weeks I’ve been out on one of the most famous lakes, Eagle Lake, and one of the most remote, Long Legged / Stork Lake.  The bite on Eagle Lake has been pretty consistent, although the bite windows are getting narrow. It’s about being on the water at the right time. Over the October 2nd and 3rd weekend we fished Eagle Lake. I was using a new lure, the Topline baits, Ripper and hooked into a thick heavy fish buried in the weeds. Hunter MacDonald, from Temple Bay Lodge has been putting some Eagle Lake musky across the deck in his boat as well. His most recent fish have been hitting Red October tubes as he jigs them back to the boat over deep break lines.

Over the Thanksgiving weekend I spent the weekend with my extended family at Long Legged Lake resort. My wife’s family worked there over the years and I did some musky guiding up there as well.  Despite strong winds and variable weather conditions we were able to put 6 fish in the bag.

I picked up two on a Chaos Tackle regular Medusa in black / orange. One on a shallow weed to gravel transition and one off a main lake reef system.

My brother in law, Richard Madussi bagged two on a Bondy Royal Orba on back to back casts. We saw multiple fish in this current area above a rocky saddle that funnels water to the lower Lake.

Ryan Sawchuk was able to get one to go on a bucktail, a bait not often used this late in the season. He used the bucktail as a throwback lure to get active muskies to chase into the figure 8.

My wife finished the trip off with a beautiful main lake fish that was sitting over shallow rocks next to a 60’ drop off. She lost one earlier in the weekend and was not to be denied this time. Both fish hit a jointed Nuch crank bait.

My buddy Hunter had just received this bait in the mail and was kind enough to let us break it in for him!

The full moon next week should bring with it some cooler weather and a drop in lake temps. Anglers looking for the sucker bite are waiting for some cooler nights to get the whitefish and Cisco up shallow in preparation for their spawn. This should start to get the muskies onto familiar fall patterns.

This is by far one of my favorite patterns of the year. With just over a month left in our season things will start to happen and change quickly now. November can be very unpredictable and you have to be prepared to be in the water any chance you can.  Good luck, anglers! I hope you all finished your season strong.
