Guide Lines with Jeremy Burris: Northern Illinois

Much needed rain pushed through northern Illinois Friday and cooled the river back down to 65 degrees. Unfortunately the rise in water levels did not last more than a couple days. Fishing has remained tough with huge fluctuations in water temps and levels but if you remain determined you will find active fish.

The active muskies have been taking advantage of gizzard shad spawning along current seams on the deeper channel edges. The hot bait this week has been the white Nut Buster Jr spinner baits slow rolled tickling bottom. Casting upriver parallel to the channel edges has been the ticket. Good weed growth has taken off the last week with lots of new cabbage popping up in the shallows. These areas will be muskie hotspots when the river rises next.

Good luck,
Jeremy Burris
