Guide Lines with Andy Schiera: Fox Chain of Lakes
Our waterway started the week coming out of a cold front in the upper sixties.
The next few days followed with extremely clear, calm and hot temperatures. The weed growth has been tremendous and secondary deep weeds now exist out to 20′ of water in the right places.
The Musky fishing has been awesome this week with trolling and casting patterns both producing! The fish are fiesty, tail walking and coming way up to chase a bait!!
We’ve had both great numbers and size. Casting rubber baits like the mid sized Medusa or regular sized bulldog has been most consistent. Heavier bucktails slowly rolled over the deep edges and basin would be my next favorite technique.
With the calm, hot days, our waterway has an extremely high algae content. Currently the Bloom on the entire system has algae levels 5 times higher than recommended for swimming. We are about 5″ below summer pool with no rain in the forecast.
Visibility on most lakes is less than 2′ with surface vegetation still atrocious from the surge of pleasure boaters associated with the hot weather pattern.
Water temps during my walleye trip today were up to 83.5*
I’m off the Muskies for a few!!
Lets pray for
rain.
