Guide Lines with Andrew Schiera: Illinois Muskies
April started as a warm month with our IL fish relating to shallow sand and warm clay shorelines in 4-6′ of water.
The first spawned out Musky out of the Fox Chain, (Northern IL) hit the net Thursday 4/15.
Using Mega imaging it appears that about half of our fish were able to spawn with the new moon second week of April as the remainder should be finishing this last week of April on the warming trend associated with the full moon period.
Given our Northerly IL temperature swings and cold nights through May 1st, our top water bite has been good within the most fertile weed patches in conjunction with current, sand, and hopefully bait!
Early May has been single inline bucktails, glide baits and 6-10″ jerkbaits. With some rubber fish showing up in the basin ranges now that they are post spawn!
June is a great time to get young Esox anglers into casting. Playful fish starting out in open water! Smaller sized 8s and 9s (bucktails) run well through October!
Let’s hope the Fox Waterway Agency can manage pool height and flow if we ever get the rest of the spring
rain.
Might be another “No Wake” Memorial Day
