Guide Lines with Andrew Schiera: Fox Chain of Lakes
The end of May has been full of surprises! This month started with the temps screaming out of spawning range and into mid summer temps (75*).
With that, our fish have been scattered off of the primary breaklines (6-10′ of water) as well as, mid basin depending on the visibility and conditions.
Successful presentations for this week have been linear (Prop style) topwaters or buck-tails AND pull/pause baits (Dussas or dive & rise) for my boat.
Our Gizzard shad have been spawning over the last 2 weeks. Most of the mature shad population began leaving the shallow channels and spawning areas last week Monday/ Tuesday as the surface temperatures rose to 74-75*.
After the massive cold front came in last Wednesday, we are now back into the 63* range on the Fox Chain of Lakes. The cold rain seems to have confused the shad population and have the fish back tight into the shallow cover.
I started fishing last week very aggressively with loud and large presentations but as the stiff North winds continue, I have been holding the boat at a slower speed and downsizing back to spring presentations and cadences.
