Guide Lines from Sam Scott: A Virginia fishing report!

After a brief warm up in river temperatures the action ground to a halt this last week. We had a hard time finding active fish to start last week off. A few lazy follows while running pull baits was about all we managed the first day. But this week was more about quality over quantity and I personally would prefer that everyday!

I decided to try throwing some of the biggest baits in the box and running them super slow in hopes that presenting them with a large easy meal would get one or two to go! That seemed the be the ticket and on day 2 we hooked 2 very large fish on the 14” BRM exclusive Dark Sucker Whale Tail, landing one of them. This would be the first musky my client Nora had ever caught , a true Virginia Giant! The 14” Dark Sucker Whale Tail has been responsible for multiple big fish in my boat this year, including some 50” specimens!

The next day Was more of the same , slow lazy fish on everything we threw at them, until we brought out the big guns later in the afternoon. Client Scott Monk had this big girl choke down a Full Size Painter Catfish , making this big bait look tiny in her jaws!

Lesson for this week was , when the fish lay low after an abrupt temperature change in the late winter – try throwing some really big offerings to them and run them super slow. Just faster than the “stall speed” , the point at which your bait no longer has action – working these big baits just faster than that was the key !

We have another solid week or so of musky fishing after this rain and cooler temps held off the spawn for us. Our fish generally start spawning around 54-55F water temps and we are seeing 49F this week. Just a few more days to get a big pre spawner in the boat and then we will leave them alone for the whole month of April !

If your interested in coming out for a musky hunt with Blue Ridge Musky , send me an email and we can discuss dates and options for 2021/2022 !
