Guide Lines with Jeff Van Remortel: Northern Wisconsin

The outlook for Northern Wisconsin muskies looks strong as water temperatures have stabilized and the unseasonably warm temperatures finally subsided. Water temps are hovering in the mid-70s and we are firmly locked in pre-summer peak conditions as weed growth continues to boom. The bite this past week during the heat and humidity was fantastic and was followed by a tougher bite this past weekend in the high skies and post-frontal conditions. Several local tournaments took place this weekend and the results also showed a relatively tough bite across the board. Many of the fish caught have been adhering well to moon phase. Fish activity outside of those periods has been more lethargic. However, some big fish have been on the move and I expect the fishing, especially for the larger specimens, to be very good the rest of the month.

Bait selection remains varied, and we have had action on just about every type of bait. The 46-incher we caught in this past weekend’s Musky Hunter School was on a Medussa. Small to medium-sized blades, Suicks, Minnow baits, glide baits and topwater all produced action as well in the School. Look for the rubber and top water bite to gain steam in the near future.
